Firing squad is now an execution method in South Carolina for prisoners with death sentences.

On Wednesday, May 5th South Carolina lawmakers voted to include firing squad as an execution method for prisoners on death row, the vote was 66-43 in favour of the bill.

Death row prisoners were to choose between electrocution and being shot in case of unavailability of lethal injection.

Henry Mcmaster, the state’s Republican Governor said he would sign the legislation into law.

Considering that there are presently 37 death row inmates and almost half of them are black, some democrats opposed it that it is disproportionately against Black people.

While some democrat prefer firing squad as opposed to death by electrocution but condemning the death penalty all together. This should be because it’s a faster means of execution than being burned alive which they termed a horrific way of treating a human.

Other state like Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Utah will also adopt this method of execution according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
